Wisdom tooth. Delete or not delete?

Western dentists categorically insist: the wisdom tooth should be removed, as they say, in the bud as soon as it shows signs of existence. Why endure the torment of cutting, if you can once and for all get rid of this scourge ?! This opinion has developed among American dentists thanks to the research of their own anthropologists. Scientists say that in our time the “wisdom tooth” is a rudiment from which there is no use. The length of the jaws of modern man, compared with the jaws of the primitive, was reduced by 12 mm. These changes have led to the fact that eighth teeth are often not even laid in the project. And healthy and strong “eights” are a rare exception to the rule. The Western cult of thinness added fuel to the fire, when people, in order to achieve the effect of sunken cheeks, pull out not only all wisdom teeth, but also two healthy chewing teeth on each side.

Domestic dentists have a fundamentally opposite opinion: if wisdom teeth grow, then they are needed, removing them means committing a crime against one’s own health. And substantiate their opinion:

Healthy eighth teeth are a reliable support for the rest. They prevent loosening of the main ones, bearing a colossal daily load.
In people whose “eights” have not erupted, the “sevens” often grow incorrectly, and the gums in the corners of the mouth are injured by solid food.
With age, most people lose their basic teeth, and the “wise” become a support for bridges.
“Slavic” these teeth were called by our Slavic ancestors. They believed that only an adult who has gained worldly experience and comprehended true wisdom becomes worthy of them. A wisdom tooth grows painfully and for a long time. Unpleasant sensations are due to the fact that it does not have a “milk” predecessor and grows after the final formation of bone tissue of an adult. Unlike soft baby gums, a wise tooth has to overcome the powerful obstacle of an adult jaw.

Of course, if caries formed in the new tooth, it is removed, since treatment is impossible due to the inaccessibility of dental tools. Removing the molar of wisdom is also necessary in the case when it grows with a shift to the side, threatening to change the bite, injure the mucous membrane of the cheek or tongue. It happens that the “eight” does not grow through the gum, but is immersed in the tissue of the jaw. It damages the roots of the main teeth, provokes neurological pains in the jaws, head, ear, eye, throat.

Cutting the eighth tooth can cause pericoronitis – inflammation of the gums. It grows slowly, the slot remains small, and the tissues form a so-called hood over it. Pathogenic microbes can enter the hood through this slot, causing infectious suppuration inside the gums. If the process is not given due attention and treatment is not prescribed, not only a wisdom tooth can suffer, but also a neighboring one.

If you start to “grow wiser”, and this process is accompanied by painful sensations, immediately consult a dentist. He will take an x-ray and determine the position of the tooth in the row. If everything is normal with the “newborn”, then the doctor will prescribe a course of treatment that eliminates the inflammatory process. And if the “eight” is problematic, then the surgeon will perform an operation to remove it.
